Jay Miller is a 40 year resident of Santa Fe, a former school teacher and employee of the National Education Association of New Mexico. Much of that time was spent as chief lobbyist for the school employees of the State. As he was completing his time in that service, he bought Inside the Capitol, a column of political commentary, written by the late Fred McCaffery, which was syndicated in newspapers across the state.

Inside the Capitol has a long history in New Mexico. It was originally written by Will Harrison, when he edited the Santa Fe New Mexican in the 1950's. When Harrison left the New Mexican, he syndicated the column in other newspapers. And thus began a tradition that passed down through Charlie Cullin, Fred Buckles, Bob Huber, Carroll Cagle and Fred McCaffery to Jay.

He has written the column since 1987, the longest run of any of the authors - some 5000 columns. It appears in Los Alamos, Espanola, Las Vegas and many papers throughout southern New Mexico. The columns can also be found online.

Jay has served on the Santa Fe School Board for six years, and in numberous other community, religous and social organizations, including a group that built floats for the Santa Fe Historical/Hysterical Parade for 25 years.

ABOUT COMMON SENSE

Using the title of the pamphlets written by the great American patriot Thomas Paine, which helped foment the American Revolution, it is hoped that the discussions initiated by this website can help create some revolutionary thinking about Santa Fe's problems and how to solve them.

ABOUT JAY'S POLITICS

Readers always want to know the politics of the people they read. And it is seldom revealed. So readers often are left to assume they are just a part of the “liberal media.” You’ll probably have a little more trouble pigeon-holing me because sometimes I will appear liberal and sometimes conservative. The secret is that I fundamentally am libertarian. (That’s a small “l” because I am a registered Democrat in order to have the most choices on primary election day.) As you know, libertarians think that government isn’t the answer to much of anything. Democrats are known to like government.
Another closely-held secret is that Republicans often like government too. That’s why many Republicans had trouble figuring out Gary Johnson, who was more libertarian than anything else. I’m not really sure how proud I am of it, but I guess I could be called a Gary Johnson Democrat.
